So true Mario. As a teacher I believe our hope lies in creating a new mind set in our school children. We need to literally brain wash them to be conscious of social issues. At college level, I deal with the casualties of a school system that is no longer value based and that largely churns out teenagers who are bookish and socially apathetic. The absence of youngsters at our Saligao monthly Gram Sabhas speaks for itself. I guess we oldies will have to just keep chipping away😊Good luck.Alice. Let's learn from Chennai's mistakes: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-34992004 --------------------------- How are we planning for Saligao?... We want, have encouraged or have actively supported: - a disaster-prone, garbage treatment plant on the hill on top of our heads, with 100s of garbage trucks trundling through populated vaddos of Saligao... - a football stadium in a water catchment area opposite Lourdes Convent... - a highway with tourist traffic zooming through the heart of the village... - insane construction at Salmona Spring which is the last corner of natural beauty and heritage left in Saligao... - illegal chawls and slums like the one in Abreuvaddo which are disease, fire and flood death-traps, without sanitation and water supply... - dangerous mobile phone towers in residential areas... - throwing garbage into our fields, gutters & nullahs... - illegal gaddos and other stuctures along our roads without proper setbacks, posing a danger to traffic, local villagers & animal life... - laying of water, electricity & phone lines anywhere at all, without any planning, resulting in chaos when they break down... - so many other mindless, village projects that are only calamities waiting to happen... When will we ever learn...oh when will we ever learn? Warm regards & solidarity.
