*PRESS NOTE* IN FAVOUR OF PUBLICATION *TAG to hold Condolence Meet for late Ophelia & Oslando on 4th April 2016 at Margao* Veteran tiatr artiste Ophelia Cabral and folklorist Oslando de Souza, passed away recently in Mumbai. The Tiatr Academy of Goa will be organising a special Condolence Meet to pay tributes to these departed souls on 4th April 2015 at 4:30 pm at Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan-Margao, Fatorda Goa. *Ophelia:* Ophelia Cabral one of the most versatile actress and singer of her time who mesmerized the audience with her acting and singing abilities, left for her heavenly abode on 19th February 2016 at Mumbai. Ophelia was the recipient of Tiatr Academy’s Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Award in 2009 and Goa State Cultural Award in the year 2010-11 for her valuable contribution towards the tiatr stage. She has also given outstanding performances in Konkani films like ‘Amchem Noxib’, ‘Nirmonn’, ‘Boglantt’, ‘Bhuyerantlo Monis’ and ‘Mogachi Faxi’. She first acted on the tiatr stage in A. F. Rod’s tiatr ‘Opurbayechi Sun’ in 1954. The role she portrayed in this tiatr as a wicked daughter-in-law impressed the audience as well as other tiatr directors. She established herself as a talented actress with a superb performance in tiatr ‘Avoicho Xirap’ written and directed by C. Alvares. Since then Ophelia went of performing roles of different characters very effectively with much depth and maturity in numerous tiatrs directed by different directors like Master Vaz, Dr. Simon Fernandes, C. Alvares, Souzalino, M. Boyer, etc. Her greatest strength was portraying tragic roles which earned her the mantle of “Tragedy Queen” for her excellence in tragedy scenes. Besides acting she wrote and directed her own tiatrs namely ‘Mhojim Bhurgim’ and ‘Bailanchi Sobai’. She also along with her late husband Bab Peter went on to jointly produce and direct 8 tiatrs which were highly acclaimed by the people. *Oslando:* Oslando de Souza was born on 21.09.1930 and by a sheer coincidence, also passed away on the same day Ophelia died i.e. 19.02.2016 at Mumbai. Hailing from Saligao, Oslando has made a considerable contribution to Konkani music. He has showcased the traditional folk songs Mando and Dulpod as well as humorous songs which he sang and recorded on cassettes and Compact Discs. They will forever remain as an evidence of his great work in the Konkani Musical field. Oslando recorded his first presentation, 'Poilo Pavs' on HMV in 1971. The Mando 'Poilo Pavs' was his original composition which became very popular. Then in 1975 he presented his second work again on HMV. This bore the title ‘New Konkani Hits’ and included numbers which he had himself composed and set to music. Then came the era of audio cassettes. Between 1978 and 1991, he produced four cassettes of Mando-Dulpod, folk songs and traditional Konkani songs: 'Soul of Goa' (1978), 'Goa Meu Amor' (1981), 'Boas Festas' (1984) and 'Nostalgia' (1991). ‘Boas Festas’ contains the traditional Goan 'Alvorada'. Apart from recording, Oslando presented several programmes of Konkani folk songs on All India Radio, Mumbai. Together with his orchestra 'Oslando & His Folklorists' he participated in programmes such as ‘All-India Folk Music Radio Festival’ and ‘All-Asia Folk Music Radio Festival’. His group has also presented several programmes of folk songs and folk dances on Mumbai Doordarshan. Oslando has also brought out a 336 page Music book in English, 'The Christian Goan Konkani Folk & Art Songs (A New Perspective)'.
