Read about the demise of U.Joe earlier but Fiona reminded me today that the funeral is tomorrow. We pray for the repose of his soul.
Ramesh has said it all & I remember U.Joe exactly as the tribute has been paid even though I have been out of Saligao for 3 decades. It is a good picture inserted & I remember him the same way. I recall him telling the children in the corridor of our St. Anne's Chapel to keep quiet when the mass had started. So yeh, strict he was but that is how it should be. Our condolences to the family, they will all miss U.Joe seeing that he has been with them & around them, many many years & was still active & they would have been used to his presence. I think I last met him in January 2015 but didnt see him this year. May his soul rest in peace! Yesterday at 7.30 pm our neighbour Joe Fernandes expired peacefully at his residence at Muddavado Saligao. He would have been 94 in December...was still fit, active , sharp ...it's a shock for my Muddavado neighbourhood that Joe uncle has passed away... Joe uncle had always been lovingly strict , very transparent ..not a bit fogginess in his attitude . He was a thorough gentlemen ...never ever used slang or rude language even with kids ... wouldn't hesitate to correct our phrases whenever we spoke badly...last forty years I never saw any change in his tough attitude . Although none of his sons played football for our local clubs he contributed lot for the administration of Saligao sporting club, always encouraged local boys to move ahead In 1976 my brother answered his SSC exam, we had no electricity than , he offered my brother space along with his 13 children to study..I don't think anybody would have done it with such a big family ...my brother still remembers those days..and his good deed..he encouraged everyone from our Vaddo to study.. Uncle Joe had been always young at heart..he would still enjoy reading spy thrillers..Sydney Sheldon. He enjoyed a peg of XXX Rum with his meal..few of my friends began copying him , thinking that was the secret of his longevity. I find it hard to believe that I won't see him any more reading his news paper sitting on the sopo of his 'bolcao' .. Salute to Uncle Joe..he was a great extraordinary man...fountain head of knowledge , source of inspiration for our neighbourhood..he has left rich harvest of memories for us to cherish . May God rest his soul in eternal peace.
