I noticed that our quaint village has narrow lanes especially in between many houses in Arrarim. Some houses seem so close that they appear whispering to one another! Why would such big houses ..some a storey high, having properties with a large enough space for flowering plants in front and an orchard of fruit bearing trees in the backyard, have such narrow pathways? Cruz Vaddo, DeMello Vaddo, Sequiera vaddo …all separated by just over a meter in some areas! This got me thinking…..and imagining life in our village a few centuries ago! Walking down the lane …..chatting with a senior resident …..here is what she had to say… For one thing - one didn’t miss any company and as these names suggests the original owners of these houses seemed to have been related…and so the vaddo became an extended family . The most obvious reason could be that when help was needed….they didn’t have to go too far for they simply would have called out! I can imagine how they might have gathered in the evenings in the house’s cool verandahs to catch up with news ,sport and gossip..maybe engage in a singsong or in prayer recitation, or recite the Rosary- litany or maybe implore the various saints. A generous neighbor would share a Goan sweet during tea time Godshe, Tizan, doce and more. (Cooked over firewood!) There was no transport during these times and everyone walked. Maybe there were a few bullockcarts and horse carriages which used only the main roads. Bicycles as suppose were the only means of transport later on other than the public caminhao. Most outdoor activities were played in the fields…football, marbles…. I can imagine that if there ever was a fight in a home it would surely reverberate around the ward and if some one was tanked up on Feni that would have also spelt a major domestic problem adding more fuel to that locally brewed spirit. The baker walked these lanes carrying a basket of freshly baked bread on his head ..resting his basket on his dando for support. These lanes had many aristocratic mansions whose roof tiles were made of terracotta from mangalore …flooring tiles were imported mainly from Portugal while the smaller homes had red clay tiles on the roof and cowdung for the floor! I also noticed a common well in between some lanes! Despite social disparity the villagers got on well strangely as equals in a then class consumed society. These homes were built laboriously with the stones and building material being carried on the head from the main road! Some houses as you may noticed are now abandoned or have crumbled down! A few of these lanes are now tarred for a small vehicle to get by . So much for the beauty in the simplicity of LIFE in the good old days!
