Saligao waste plant channelises methane gas to generate power MARGAO: Operating entirely on power generated by the plant, Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd at Saligao plateau has cleared a lot of leftover waste and has been successful in using recycled water for gardening and flushing purposes.
Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd, commenced its operations on May 30, 2016. The plant channelises the gas generated through the waste treating process and sulphide and carbon dioxide are released in the atmosphere after flushing them through stacks of coconut shells to remove the odour. The methane gas is channelized to generate power. The plant is capable of generating 340 kw of power daily, but at present it generates on an average 300 ks of which 250 KW is utilized by the plant, while 50 kw is distributed to the Saligao grid, which is 3500 to 4000 units per day. The government has not yet finalized the rate at which this power is distributed to the grid by the plant. However, the plant management is happy that they are consuming less power. The plant has a power connection as standby, especially when they are forced to have a shut down for maintenance when the power from the grid is required. Interestingly, the plant has set up an effluent treatment plant where the wastewater from the drains is treated and recycled for gardening and flushing purposes. The compost generated at the plant is used for maintaining the plants in the complex. In fact Organic City Compost has already been certified and Zuari Agro Chemicals will be selling it shortly as bio-fertilizer.
