BJP lost its two strongholds to GFP in the assembly polls but later joined hands with Goa Forward to form the government. And within two months of joining hands, the rivals-turned-allies are back on the political battleground and would try to consolidate their voter base. While BJP state unit president Vinay Tendulkar and GFP leader and town and country planning minister Vijai Sardesai made it clear that their parties will not back any candidate in the panchayat election, the ground reality is completely different. Both BJP and GFP workers have begun to file their nominations in these two constituencies and a cold war is likely to be witnessed in some of the wards of Saligao and Siolim constituencies. Political observers say that the sitting MLAs of Saligao and Siolim will try to make sure that the candidates whom they are supporting, win the election. There was a lot of resentment among the voters of fisheries minister Vinod Palyekar and housing minister Jayesh Salgaonkar, in their respective constituencies, as they supported BJP when they won the assembly elections on an anti-BJP poll plank. Political analysts said if both Palyekar and Salgaonkar fail to get their supporters elected in the panchayat polls, then it will send a wrong signal in their constituencies. Panchayat elections are equally important for BJP's former Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar and former Siolim MLA Dayanand Mandrekar to gain lost ground after the assembly elections. "If both Parulekar and Mandrekar-supported candidates lose the elections, then BJP as well as its former MLAs, have to really struggle to make a comeback," a political observer said, adding that when there is some resentment against GFP, this is the right time for former BJP ministers to stage a comeback. Salgaonkar told TOI that he is helping GFP supporters to win the panchayat elections. "We have an understanding with BJP in some wards, since we are in a coalition. But the understanding will not be at the cost of GFP supporters," he said. Parulekar said he will not be active for the panchayat polls. "Whoever has come to me for my support to win the elections, I have offered to help them, but I will not campaign for any of the candidates for the panchayat polls," he said. With approximately 25,928 voters, Saligao constituency comprises six village panchayats including Saligao, Verem-Reis Magos, Nerul, Pilerne, Sangolda and Guirim.
