The Bhobes, a long standing family of Nerul, are the only committed folks left in the area, who take the trouble to maintain their salt pans. At Rs. 50/- a tin of old salt and Rs 80/- for new, one wonders if the family breaks even, at all. But for the Bhobes, it is not about money. It is a labour of love! This patriotic family is tied to the land in a very real way: the "salt of the earth" helps them own and promote a traditional occupation. Although all of them are professionals, earning a living outside Nerul, the family 'agor' (salt pan) keeps them anchored to the village economy which struggles for survival in a globalised market. Goa needs to be extremely grateful to families like the Bhobes of Nerul, that strive to preserve their Goenkarponn in such tangible ways. Salt making is a traditional, grassroots, village economy that has to be preserved and promoted, at all costs. It is eco-friendly, employment-generating and sustainable with no carbon footprint at all. This genuine product of grassroots-Goa, is totally natural with no chemicals added. It has medicinal properties and is blessed with the presence of over a dozen natural minerals. Even though it requires a lot of human labour, it is surprisingly cheaper than the expensively packed 'iodised salt' that has flooded the market in recent years. To promote and save this important traditional occupation, environmentalists, NGOs, Goa-lovers, those who want to save Goa and the planet, as well as the common person in the vaddo, are strongly encouraged to buy locally produced, salt-pan salt.
