It's so much fun, so easy to do and I anyway love books. I remember what we gained from the lovely Saligao Institute library in its time. The search for 'Western' and other novels. The anticipation of the smell of books on Saturday evenings. The volunteer librarians who clocked in hours and carefully noted the books that were lent. If not wrong, this all came about because of the generosity of Saligaokars in Bombay. What vision they had; if we can even copy a tiny part of their work, it might make some difference. I have 'thanked' the SI library and it's (scarce but extremely helpful in its time) reading table in my first book. We could answer interviews, exams and competitive exams because of it. At the Panchayat gram sabhas, we often asked for a village library. So I thought, why wait? It is still a very small initiative and waiting to be scaled up.i am making new friends and reviving old friendships because of the books. Let's see what we can manage. But I'm optimistic. So many have been so generous with their pre-loved books.... And it's simply not true that children don't like reading anymore. It's just a question of with what and how one gets them involved.
