We have West End in Tabravaddo, a Night Club that creates a high decibel
racket, at least twice a week. Then there is Silver Bells in Sangolda, Alva
Mar and Emerald Lawns in Parra, all open air dance floors that blast
mega-watt, live music into neighbouring Saligao, whenever there is a wedding
or dance organised there. Add to this Foxes Nite and the Saligao Institute's
annual dances that keep the village awake till dawn.

Christmas carols at 6 every morning during the Christmas season and the Rosary
on the public address system at 7 each evening, in the months of May and
October have recently been stopped because of noise pollution.

The Alvorada (a live brass band) at the house of the President of the Church
Feast at 5 in the morning, preceeded by heart-attacking 'gornals' (extremely
loud fire crackers that are actually banned by law), is ably matched by the
early morning and late night bhajans from various temples and houses.

This wide variety of sound pollution, continues to assault Saligao ear drums -
particularly the sensitive ones of the aging, young and students.

If everyone was permitted to blast music till 6 in the morning like the many
dances used to do till the sound ban was enforced, and like West End used to
do till Chief Minister Parrikar waltzed in and stopped it 2 years ago, can
you imagine the state of the local ear drum and nervous system?

It is true that every tourist eats, drinks and makes merry for "only" a few
days...may be "just once" in a lifetime, here in Goa. But we have millions
of them each year, frequenting thousands of sound blasting, ear shattering
venues across the State. They then return to sanity and a normal life in
their hometowns.

The local Goenkar *lives here* forever. This is home for us.

Is it too much to ask for a sane and normal life - especially for our little
children, students and the old?

Later...

M&M.
