THE PRE-PORTUGUESE INHABITANTS OF SALIGAO AND THEIR DEITIES-IV.
The Hindu Mahajans.
It is interesting to note that " Gaud Saraswat Samaz Parichay Granth",
edited by Ravindra Patkar, gives the following information regarding
Sallganv Hindu Bhramins, except Petkars Sallgaokar ,of Saligao at Advalpal.
Besides the four mahajans , Porob Salgaokar, Naik Salgaokar, Sinai
Salgaokar( Parsekar) and Dhond Salgaokar( Gole), the book registers other
Hindu Brahmins with surnames like Azganvkar, Kogekar, Harolikar, Khattkhate,
Gole, Bakur, Modi, and Rashiwadakar. They are also Mahajans and they worship
Shri Xervani-Vetal at Advalpal as their " gram-deva"( village deity) at
Salgao-vaddo. So we have 12 as total 'mahajans' in this book while the
Official Government Gazette, Goa of 3rd November, 1966 ,page 397 mentions
just the following five: Porob Salgaokar---54 members; Naique Salgaokar-130
members; Sinai Salgaokar-179 members; Dhond Salgaokar---111 members and
Petkar Salgaokar( Sudra)-333 members. As we have said before Petkar
Salgaokar were recognized as the 5th Vangor in the year 1966 only
By the Order of 13th October, 1966( Vide, Official Gazette of 3rd November,
1966, page 387), the Rules and Regulations of the Hindu Temple of Xri Devi
Xervani and Shri Vetal Salgaunkar of Advalpale, Bicholim Taluka comprising
of 24 sections was approved and signed by the Director of Civil
Administration Services The sanction accorded to the Rules & Regulations is
signed by G.K. Bhanot, Chief Secretary. So the Goa Government Gazette does
not say anything regarding the other mahajans mentioned in the Saraswat
Samaz Parichay Granth.
The Catalogue of mahajans of Porob, Naik, Siani, Dhondd and Petkar was also
approved by B.R. Basu, Collector and Director of Civil Administration dated
14th September, 1966( Vide, Official Gazette, op. cit., p. 397)

N.B. Dhondd are Brahmins from Kudal known as Kuldalldeshkar wheareas
Dhondd (Goll) are Brahmins from Bardez. Besides, Kashyap and Varsa gotras
(clans) which are mentioned in the Konkanakyan, other gotras are Kaundinya,
Bhradwaz and Kutsa. One thing is clear that their main deity is Shri
Xervani-Vetal Salgaunkar with headquarters in Advalpale ( Vide, Gaud
