Dear friends,
Cause of our Joy (COOJ )is a charitable trust registered in 2002 with the main aim of providing mental health services to the community. We do realize the large population of people suffering from the highly stigmatizing mental illness, many of whom do not get the required help either due to ignorance about the sickness or the attitudes of the community towards the disease. They thus loose out on living their full potential besides the burden caused to the family and even society.
Much research has been done and with newer medications as well as psycho social interventions a lot can be done to alleviate symptoms thus helping these patients to live normal to near normal lives.
To help break this stigma as well as to educate people about the illness we are organizing a one day awareness programme on mental illness on 1st August 2004 at Green Park Hotel, Guirim, Bardez, Goa between 9:30am to 4:00pm which will be free of charge and inclusive of lunch.
So far in Goa the only professional help given to those suffering from chronic mental illness is medication and some basic counseling. This does not help to develop other skills like social skills, communication skills etc which might have been affected.
As part of our services we have opened a day care center "SAHODAYA" (at Gomes Catao Bldg, near Alankar Cinema, Mapuca) catering to the mentally ill to help them live independent lives. For details I may be contacted on 2265550 between 10:30-1:00pm at my clinic in the same building.
