Hi SaligaoNetters, This is the first time I've heard that Avocado Tree is growing in Saligao & that too in Rico's Garden. The only avocado tree I've seen since our family returned from Africa, was in Corjuem. The family were Africanders - so that accounts for it I guess, must have brought the seeds & planted in Goa.

Like Daniel, I'd rather eat the fruit/vegetable than do all the work of planting & waiting for it to finally bear fruit - he he! And it can also be eaten as a vegetable, but that is an acquired taste However, it is the only vegetable which adds to your calorie count ... so beware! > >....the late Aunty Peggy (Mascarenhas), who like many an elderly Goan had >green > >fingers and loved planting. She was responsible for this tree coming up >too. Did A.Peggy have a treee in her garden too? gosh! Yes she did have green fingers & knew a lot of things, she was a sort of agriculturist (through experience). > >Coming back to avocados, I initially had to hunt around for information > >about this fruit. Really? Well I guess in the hotels it is always served as a vegetable or as an appetizer. It is not cheap here in the Gulf. Skinned & halved, it acts as a bed for boiled prawns which have been dipped in thousand island dressing - yummy! Rico, in case you dont get this dressing there, it's very easy to make - just mix in equal proportion ... tomato ketchup & mayonnaise. >The Avocado fruit is a much sought after delight in Goa with people who >know the taste. If one visits Bangalore, Avocado is avilable in plenty and >at a much cheaper rate compared to Amchem Goem! Yeh, that's right! If you want to try it as a milk shake, delicious ... then .... Skin the avocado, put it in the mixer along with some milk & sugar & you have a milkshake . If you want it cool & flavoured, add a scoop of icecream to the mixture - delicious & cooooool - sorry didnt give you the recipe earlier when your temperatures were boiling hot,.... makes a filling & nutritious meal for the kids too as they dont have to count the calories. Enjoy! Rico.. that is if there are any more avocados left on your tree, then you & Daniel can have a treat Ta ra.
