To observe Earth Day, Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 22nd April will focus on the Protection of Natural Springs in Goa: a citizens concern
In the recent past the people's campaigns for the protection of natural springs in Saligao and Merces have drawn alot of media attention.
Over the years the various natural springs in Goa have come under attack due to various reasons. Contamination of the water at the source of the springs, drying up of the source due to tree felling and construction, pollution of the springs due to dumping of garbage, washing of toxic materials etc are some of the reasons affecting the natural springs.
However the single most important problem affecting the natural springs is the neglect by people. Over the years the community responsibility over the protection and maintenance of the natural springs has diminished and there is a general apathy towards any positive action.
What steps can the local community take to protect the natural springs in the village ? What financial assistance and technical advice can be provided by the Forest Department and the Department of Science and Environment ? Have the studies done on the natural springs of Goa resulted in any Governmental action plan ? What steps can the Village Panchayats, Municipal Councils and environmental NGO's take to protect the natural springs ?
The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and and also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue.
Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public.
