Dear Editor,
The Botanical Society of Goa welcomes the initiative of H.E. Mr. S.C.Jamir, the Governor of Goa, to visit the site personally with a view to resolve the issues arising from the apparently legal but obviously undesireable RCC and masonary construction adjoining the traditional source of water at Salmona Spring in the village of Saligao.
This fresh water spring, which emerges at the foot of the Saligao-Pilerne plateau below the Department of Science & Technology, has provided drinking water to the residents of Saligao when the taps run dry in summer. It has nutured generations of Boy scouts and Girl Guides who have quenched their thirst and cooked their food with this water.
The Botanical Society of Goa has organised nature trails near the Salmona Fountain and its upper reaches for its members to see the rich biodiversity in its natural glory, both in summer and during the monsoons. It is also a birdwatcher's haven. All this will come to an end if a building is allowed to be constructed right next to the Salmona Spring.
The Botanical Society of Goa expresses its solidarity with the residents of Saligao, the Community Based Organisations [CBOs] in Saligao, the Nisarga Nature Club-Mapusa and Centre for Environment Education [CEE]-Porvorim in their quest to preserve the Salmona Spring in its natural state.
Miguel Braganza President Botanical Society of Goa.
