Dear Cybergaokars on SaligaoNet, Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 25th November on the occasion of the International Day against Violence on Women will focus on the role of men in the fight against violence on women. Women of all economic backgrounds, ethnic-origin, religion and creed face gender-discrimination and are subjected to direct and indirect violence due to the patriarchal structure of our society. In Goa cases of rape, torture, murder for dowry, domestic violence, molestation, sexual harassment and similar acts are on the increase. Many men have expressed concern about this reality of Goa and want to bring about a change. It involves facilitating the process of challenging the attitudes and beliefs around violence on women. There is a need to increase the awareness among men about violence against women as a larger social issue. There is also a need to motivate men to shun violence, protest against violence, support survivors and provide new role models. Moreover it is important to highlight that this is not just a issue for women but involves society at large. What strategies can be used to get more men to participate in the fight against violence on women ? What methods can be used to disseminate information on the rising crimes against women in Goa ? What support can be extended to survivors of violence? How can adequate information on the law as well as assistance available from the police and women's organizations be disseminated ? The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue. Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public.
