FITZ DE SOUZA (70) has been interviewed in the February 2006 issue of
Goa Today (page 20-23). He has been a former Speaker of the Kenyan
natinal parliament, a barrister and holds a doctorate in Economics.

In the interview, Souza is quoted saying: "Actually, I was born in
Bombay but both my parents were from Goa. My father, Valente, was from
Corjuem (Ucassaim) and my mother Ramola was from Saligao."

He adds: "My father was a nationalist. He was a doctor by profession. In
1932, at the request of a doctor called Manuel Albuquerque, he decided
to go to Zanzibar. He went there and liked the place so much that he
ended up staying there for several years. Later, he moved to Kenya with
his family and settled there...."

Fitz de Souza (whose house, I believe, is located at Bambolim) also
talks about his "friend" (Pio) Gama Pinto. Another of the few Goans in
Kenya who took the side of the Africans in the anti-colonial struggle. I
believe Pio Gama Pinto too has a Saligao link. My journo-colleague
Francis Ribeiro (and his family) have told me of their links with him.
