Charmingly encapsulated these sepia hued memoirs of simpler times Rico and
Annette. I happened >to be one of those "Africander" " new kids on the
block" .........main road from Pilerne sloped >down towards the temple and
the borders of Saligao. Still remember the pink , red and white >uniformed
schoolkids taking a short cut down the hill to the school.
Wow! Well put! Glad you took the time to make your posting Anthony, despite
your problems.
Anyone remember Sabina. Michael and Anthony who as I recall were one of the
very few kids to >ride in by car from time to time .
Dont remember them, perhaps they were the younger lot? But I recall that
quite a no. of studetns were brought in cars by their parents (I think
Alfred's mum used to drop his sister to school in the white fiat - isnt it?)
whilst we walked passed the "Pond" every morning & afternoon, taking in the
stink now & then... or during the monsoons, wading through knee deep water
at the gulley (what we called VOW... Anthony & his brother had to wade
through 2 vows). That's when I gave up wearing gumboots since they were
heavy & water used to get into them anyway, joined the ranks by wearing
rainy sandals - yuks! Can you imagine the dirt & bacteria that must have
coated the skin of our feet & legs - argh! No wonder I suffered, got a lot
of sores then. Still have a couple of scars to remind me of the various home
medecines, leaves, poultices, ointments used on my feet not forgetting the
burning temperatures of 104F - phew! & Patricia's Nurse Mum & Dr. Dad giving
instructions to my parents to cool me down with cool sponges & eau de
cologne at 10.30 p.m. The plant that did the trick finally was Kantikor &
now I know why, All the Spas & Ayurvedic centres use this leaf better known
to us in English as Aloevera (which has soothing & painkilling properties)
which we have in our garden growing but didnt know the botanical name for
it. All over Goa our ancestors grew this plant & a no. of people in Saligao
have it in their garden & used it & now it is making news & used for a
variety of ailments. At the moment I'm using it here for a painful elbow &
in same manner got rid of the pain in my knee joint & recovered from the
pain in leg after an accident. It's a wonder plant. So all you people who
are aging & having joint problems, do use the sap from the leaf instead of
wasting your money on all these ointments which give only temporary relief &
sometimes spoil the skin. Sorry I digress, but the plant is growing in
Saligao so ... Saligao-related?? .
Nostalgia days indeed. Thanks for reviving/exhuming so many mental images
that I had filed away somewhere, just waiting for something like this to
trigger a rush of memories of yore. I suspect you may have lots more
synergic e-traffic flowing >from your subscribers .
For the sake of Saligaonet, we hope so!

Oh dear! Sorry to hear of your problem, Anthony! I can imagine the hassle
of dialysis but am glad you have a new lease of life with this transplant.
Do take care of your new organ/s & take care of yourself
P.S Does Annette have a sister called Fiona and a husband called Llewellyn

Yes to both questions, Anthony! And yes I know that you are a neighbour &
remember you very well, in fact everytime I'm in Goa & meet your Dad or
Albert your uncle, like I did last month, I enquire about you. This time met
your brother too. In fact spent almost an entire afternoon chatting to your
dad & Albert & debating on various topics in the verandah at Luwell's place.
Looking forward to reading about others' memories of Saligao.

of work for us & it will be our weekend.
