Catholic Parish Priest Killed In Road Mishap By SAR NEWS MAPUSA, Goa (SAR NEWS) -- The parish priest of the Holy Trinity Church, Nagoa Bardez, Father Joao Vincent Gonsalves, was killed in a fatal accident at Sangolda in the afternoon. Father Gonsalves, 65, was proceeding towards Porvorim on his Hero Honda Splendour motorcycle when a Maruti van (GA-01 R-0649) coming in the opposite direction crashed against his motorcycle and subsequently dashed against a Maruti Zen car and a Vespa scooter injuring several people. The tragedy occurred around 4 p.m. February 18. “The archdiocese has lost a great priest. He was truly loved by his parishioners and many priests in Goa,” Father Loiola Pereira, Goa Archdiocesan spokesperson, told SAR News, February 20. According to Calangute police, Father Gonsalves suffered severe injuries and his right leg was smashed. He died while being shifted to the Goa Medical College, Bambolim. The Maruti van driver, Siddiqui Hullal Tojari, 23, from New Vaddem, Vasco, told police that his bus was broken down on the Calangute-Vagator road and he was taking a mechanic to repair it. When he reached Sangolda, a Yamaha motorcycle suddenly came in his path and to avoid it, he veered his van to the right thereby crashing into Father Gonsalves and the other vehicles. While Calangute police had no information about the whereabouts of the occupants of the Maruti Zen, the Vespa scooter rider, Robert Menezes, 40, from Saligao was admitted to the Goa Medical College and is reported to be out of danger.
