Vaibhav Mukund Vaingankar, aged 28-29, native of Sanquelim-Karapur and attached to the Bicholim Police Station was on guard duty of the North District Reserve Line Force, Porvorim. He was discovered lying in a pool of blood by the schools watchman between 6.30 am and 7 am on Tuesday. I saw the man lying with face to the floor and the rifle on his legs, the watchman said. Principal, Sr Florence Fernandes, who was sleeping in her first floor room, said she heard a sound somewhere after 10 pm last night and dismissed it as a Shigmo cracker. The school is a correction centre for HSSC papers that are kept in a room within a hall room on the ground floor, she added. PI Mahesh Gaonkar said Vaingankar died of one bullet shot that passed through his chest and hit the wall at the extreme end making a dent of around three inches. The cement fragments that flew after the bullet hit the wall made a hole of close to an inch in one of the windowpanes. One of the bullet splinters was found one-metre outside the door of the classroom. According to Gaonkar, the constable, who was on rotation duty along with two others since March 22, may have placed the butt of the gun on the wall with the nozzle to his chest and with the help of a wooden rib pressed the trigger. The wooden rib was found lying next to his body. The PI said as per the suicide notes he seemed to be a lonely and disturbed man.
