NT NEWS SERVICE Vasco May 19: The deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Mormugao, Mr Levinson Martins directed the executive engineer, water resources department, Ponda, to take immediate action against the illegal pumping and selling of water from borewells at Sasmollem, Baina without any permission, violating the Ground Water Regulation Act. The residents of the area have made a written complaint against one, stating that he is involved in selling water from a borewell to private contractors without any permission or license from the department in violation of the act. Subsequently, the irritated residents also made a written complaint to the deputy collector, Mormugao. He, in turn, has told the department to take necessary action to stop the illegal drawing, pumping and selling of water from the borewell. Anticipating a law and order problem, the deputy collector, Mr Martins intervened and directed the Vasco police and the executive magistrate, Mormugao, Ms Sheru Shirodkar to visit the site, who confirmed that the water was being pumped and transported by tankers without any permission from the concerned authorities. Then, the deputy collector directed that immediate attention be taken within two days of receipt of the memorandum sent by him, failing which appropriate action would be initiated against the erring parties.
