Below are some details from the Saligao panchayat Rs 29.2 lakh budget for the year 2005-06. E&OE:
In Rupees Opening balance 3,00,000 Grants from government 13,71,000 Matching grants 2,00,000 Other grants 5,00,000 Proceeds of taxes, fees etc * House tax 1,50,000 * Lighting tax 10,000 * Signboard tax 1,000 * Professional tax 20,000 * Advt/hoardings 1,000 * Vehicle tax 500 * Dog tax 100 Fees * Certificate fees 8,000 * RBD fees 1,000 * Constr licence 100,000 * Market sopo 8,000 * Cattle pound 5,000 * Garbage fees 5,000 3,18,600 Sales proceeds 6,500 Extra ordinary receipts 2, 28,000 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Grand total 29,24,100 [Source, Gram panchayat records, personal visit, July 23, 2006] Incidentally, some of the major revenue earliers in our youth -- I recall people queueing up to pay house tax, the dog tax, and the cycle tax -- seem to be only of peripheral interest. Of course, we would all like to get the best of facilities in the village. But how can we do this without being willing to pay our fair share, and also monitoring how this money is allocated and spent? More details and discussion is welcome. Anyone being using the (fairly powerful-but-subvertable) Right to Information Act in Saligao? --FN _______________________________________________ Saligao 403511 website http://saligao.goa-india.org Saligaonet mailing list [email protected] http://lists.goacom.org/mailman/listinfo/saligaonet
