The 69 lifeguards, working on contract basis, are on an indefinite strike from yesterday demanding regularisation of their services directly under the Tourism Department. Presently, all are employed under the Goa Labour Recruitment Employment Society, which has deputed them to the Tourism Department. Today, the delegation spent more than half-an-hour with Jacques discussing on their foremost demand of regularisation bringing them "on par with the nine lifeguards of the government accruing all benefits as applicable to government employees". The National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS)-trained lifeguards agitating in front of the Tourism Department said they were not finding it easy guarding the State's beaches without adequate life-saving equipment, any accident insurance and financial security of some kind. Dayanand Pagi, who has been manning the Palolem beach in Canacona, takes away a net salary of Rs 2,787, even after completing 15 years of service. He started off with Rs 450. Even the salary's never on time, complained Devidas Matkar, of Arrosim beach. Director of Tourism Jacques, who has urged the lifeguards' to join duty, said "I've accepted their memorandum and will forward the same to the government. The proposal needs to be examined before a policy decision is taken."
