Underground power cables to be laid in Saligao NT News Service Mapusa, Feb 13 The Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Wilfred D'Souza this evening laid the foundation stone for the proposed underground electric cabling network in Saligao constituency. The Power Minister, Mr Digamber Kamat was also present on the occasion. Later addressing a gathering at the village panchayat, the Power Minister said that he favours Goa to be an ideal state in power. He said that after Panaji and Margao, Saligao is the first village constituency where the underground cabling is being undertaken under the Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme ( APDRP) scheme. Speaking further the Power Minister said that after taking over this department he has improved the condition of power supply in the state, and also he expects the department to be more responsive to the public needs.' 'There are 25 mobile vans and mobile transformers to every sub-division to maintain constant power supply, '' he said. In his address, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed the fact that he has always been wanting a regular and good quality power supply for Saligao. The Deputy Chief Minister thanked the Power Minister for considering his request and giving underground cabling system to Saligao. This work being taken up under the APDRP scheme is a joint effort of the state electricity department and the Power Grid Corporation of India. The estimated cost of the work is about Rs 2.5 crore and the work will be executed by Larsen and Toubro. Urging the electricity officials to begin with the work in right earnest, Dr D' Souza felt that Saligao should be an ideal constituency to begin with such works which can then be taken up in other villages. Others who were present on the occasion were village panchayat administrator, Ms Mary Fernandes, Parish Priest, Fr Athaide, Additional General Manager of Power Grid, Mr R K Singh, superintending engineer of Electricity, Mr Bhangui, executive enginneer from Mapusa division and Mr Verlekar. Mr Bhangui welcomed the gathering while Mr Verlekar proposed a vote of thanks.
