Dear Saligaonettekars, Poetry goes juvenile here in Saligao as Sonali Trivedi - one of the few parents who regularly volunteers time and skills at the children's library - gets our next generation of lyricists to hone their rhyming skills.
10 budding village bards aged 12 and under, strung this ode together, during the popular Reading Hour at the Frank Simoes Children's Library in the Saligao Institute, on 7 February 2007: AN ODE TO SALIGAO Oh Saligao, where we live, Where more than take, there is give... Where the peacocks screech on the hills, And the kingfishers swoop with their bright coloured bills. The windy path that leads to the church Has wires that are every bird's favourite perch. Many a villager takes his cows and roams Among the fields and stately Portuguese homes. An adventure unique is catching snakes, Some skill and guts is all it takes! Monkeys and rats are a pest And don't allow us to rest! The beautiful clear Salmona springs To our village, water brings. Pineapple, banana, mango, cashew, jackfruit and palms, With our village fruit are laden our arms. Wednesdays are a treat at the Children's Library; The day is fixed in our memory.
