On reading Muriel/Mario's posting about the underground cables, all of us
must have been shocked at the shocking news. The news really got us
worried. As for the Contractor Larsen & Toubro, this is a company of great
repute & has undertaken a lot of projects & completed the same to the
satisfaction of all, including the building of a 14 storey Apartment
Residence as an addition to our Diplomat Radisson SAS Hotel in Bahrain. The
building is superb - we have personally liaised with this company & of
course no project is complete without the proper supervision at various
levels which is what has been missing in Saligao from what I gather. Guess
everybody is now calm, waiting for the new representatives (Panchayat &
Government) to take quick action, ......hopefully! Since lives are at
stake, this is not an issue that one can procrastinate & then hope for the
best in years to come as has been done in previous years with other issues
in Saligao despite our follow up. Hopefully Dilip will do the needful
immediately.
Whilst we were patting ourselves on the back for having the honour of being
the first Village to have the underground cables etc., little did we realise
that ours would also be the first Village to be electrocuted en masse. When
I saw the state of the "road/lane" & work done near my house in Donvaddo,
just with regard to tarring of the same, I was a bit sceptical about the
bigger project of "underground cables", ... my thoughts were not very far
out I guess for one didnt need to be an engineer to see that there was no
supervision, no alignment & as I had predicted, all the rain water has been
flowing into our compounds & reached the first step of our house. I also
recall Albert stating that the underground cable project was an election
gimmick & we would probably have everything completed by the next election
(2012?). Even if the job was completed before then, & knowing now the facts
that have been brought to light, I doubt Saliganvkars would be around at the
next elections for as we now know, all would be in another Kingdom....except
for Albert & yours truly of course as we are not in Saligao. Lucky us!
There is another issue to be addressed although not as important & urgent as
the "cables" one but a problem too. This is the transport problems faced by
Saliganvkars to get to Mapusa & to return of course. Whilst on the one hand
we are the first village to have the privelege of getting hifi .....
underground cables, broadband etc., on the other hand, we are left stranded
at our various bus stops & cant get to the city of Mapusa nor return because
buses from Calangute no longer use the same route of yester years (passing
through Saligao)... Apparently Saliganvkars have to rely on the buses plying
from Betim to Mapusa. The buses from Calangute & Mapusa do not pass through
Saligao & use other routes which leaves Saliganvkars in the lurch.
Complaint made at the RTO office got the relevant buses plying for 2 days, &
it is back to square one since then. During the rainy season, it is quite
difficult to use other forms of transport I presume. If it is not one
problem, it is another & then we are asked why we are moving out of Saligao
to the cities.... I'm sure Albert has no trasport problems at all. His
choice of travel is unlimited.
Muriel/Mario, I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your knowledge,
patience, supervision, quick thinking & concern vis-a-vis the laying of the
underground cables in your vicinity, and thanks for apprising us all of the
situation on Saligaonet else we would still be in the dark. As there is no
news on the Navhind Times (which we read here), with regard to Saligao etc.,
would appreciate receiving snippets of the same on Saligaonet especially
with regard to these "cables".
