Saligao Sporting win Vagator Cup NT News Service Mapusa, Sept 3 Saligao Sporting Club registered a hard fought 5-3 win over United Club of Nerul in the finals of Vagator Soccer Cup tournament organized by Vagator Parish Youth Club at Vagator Parish grounds, today. In the evenly fought battle, the teams were locked in a 1-1 draw till the end of the 70-minute duel. Although it was Nerul who did most of the attacking in the initial stages, Saligao took the lead through medio Augusto Conciecao whose 30-yarder was too hot for the rival keeper to hold. In the second session, relentless aggression from the Nerul side finally paid off as Daniel Noronha netted the equalizer off a stunning free-kick from top of the box that made its way into the Saligao net. Nerul had numerous chances to snatch victory but rock solid defending from the Saligao defenders denied them from scoring time and again. In the ensuing tie-breaker, Saligao turned out to be better shooters, finding the mark through Uday Naik, Jose Alvares, Allen Gonsalves and Savio Monteiro while Royceton Pereira and Anthony Silveira netted for Nerul. Saligao returned home richer by Rs 15000 plus trophy while Nerul had to settle for Rs 10000 plus trophy. Following prizes were awarded: Best forward: Hasan Naik (Nerul). Best midfielder: Augusto Conceicao (Saligao). Best defender: Daniel Noronha (Nerul). Best disciplined team: Benny XI, Mapusa. Best goalkeeper: Francis Fernandes (Saligao). Player of the tournament: Uday Naik (Saligao). Mr Dayanand Mandrekar, MLA, was the chief guest. Mr Edwin Nunes sarpanch, was the guest of honour. Mr Dinesh Patil, Mr Limba and Fr Herculano Correia were the special invitees.
