Yes, Ashley, we are looking at involving all of
Saligao. We are also keen to work together with other
active groups, as Fred suggests, especially in
activities that overlap with our skills and
capacities. Can anyone suggest who we could work with?
One idea that got us excited was that of a newsletter
(physical or electronic), something which was
discussed with Frederick and with Dayanita. Another
idea was to start some sort of village forum (if it is
not already there, or offer to reinforce an existing
one, if it is already there) with regular discussions,
presentations etc that may be of interest to the life
of the village. Quite obviously, the events could feed
into the newsletter idea too.
Having myself run a local cyclostyled magazine as a
sixteen year old, I know what a high (along with
exposure, and experience of getting something creative
and socially useful done) it gives especially to young
people. But such a newsletter can have a strong local
role to play in general. It can be the diary the
village keeps, a systematic forum for people to
contribute their ideas, thoughts memories, pictures
and whatever else (voices, music?). It can provide the
occasion for young people to interview the old and
even the other way round and build both history as
well as images of the future.
What does everyone think? And what are the other
possibilities?
