Today evening in a exciting under 14 boys football finals held at the Tilak Maidan, Vasco Benfica Youth Club, Desterro Vasco defeated Boys of Baina by two goals to nil. Both the goals were scored by Benfica's mercurial forward Pankaj. Pankaj later picked up the trophy for the best player of the finals and shared the top scorer of the tournament trophy with a Regina Mundi player. The teams were at level at half time. In the first half Benfica fully dominated the proceedings, but could not translate their supremacy into goals.
The Benfica team comprises of young boys who are well built compared to the their oponents most of whom are short in stature. As a result Benfica youth could take advantage of their height with the aerial balls. The boys showed a lot of promise and talents on the field and if they persue their passion for football they will make a mark for themselves. What is more astonishing about the tournament is the fact that the same has been organised by Luciano Nascimento, a Brazilian National,who is a student of English and a qualified coach (for under 16 youth) back home in Brazil. He is a football lover to the core and Baina Boys is a team put together by him. He is training the boys all of whom are under 14 years. All the financial implications to train the boys in football since August last year and the organising of the tournament including the trophies etc, has been borne by him without the assistance of any sponsorer. Our football and sports administrators in the State should take a leaf from his book, to see what one can do when there is real passion and love in any field of human endeavour.
