Ok Mike,  Dirk is now sleeping (we hope).   the path has to be a vaild UNC, i.e.  \\<domain\server name>\c$\dir1\dir2\dir3\  or \\ip address\c$\dir1\dir2\dir3\ the directory is used for the type of check:   t= subdirectroies within the path defined; F= files in the path defined.    Best check is to create the ini file the way you want it to look.... create the external check statement (executable and ini file, and section), then process that through the geterrorlevel exec that is supplied in the external checks folder. I'm assuming the "Directory" is the directory on the remote machine that I want to check?   When I set up the "External check" within Servers Alive, I put the full path to the CountFiles.exe (C:\Program Files\Salive\External\CountFiles.exe) into the box, is this correct or should this file reside on the remote machine?   As you can tell, I've confused myself terrible on this!  Any assistance would be appreciated!     Thanks Mike
