In my opinion, this is the place to use a program such as my AreYouUp. (http://www.execpc.com/~pgt/AreYouUp.zip) You don't really care how many files are there, but rather how old are they. If they age beyond a certain point, then sound the alarm.

It would be nice to be able to check the number of files in the mail server's spooldirectory and have Servers Alive warn you when more the 200 files are in that directory. By using a combination of the external check of Servers and COUNTFILES.EXE it's now possible.
