Subject: RE: [SA-list] SizingGary,If you're going through that much trouble, why not have SA log everything out to SQL then read it in through ASP/ODBC? You could probably drag some history out of it as well with a little bit of code. Heh, in fact, I may try this now that I think about it. :-) This is a very cool product...Kevin-----Original Message-----

Subject: RE: [SA-list] SizingI'm thinking of splitting up SA onto different servers according to criticality of function. The more critical lists would be shorter and take less time. I'm also working on an xml/xslt system using xpath to create my html web site files and data formats based on an xml file created by SA. the ms parser is pretty quick, and I can do the transforms whilst the next poll is happening. However, I am new to SA, and I am open to suggestions.J. Gary Thompson-----Original Message-----

Subject: RE: [SA-list] SizingI'm running 1300+ checks right now and will be at 2200+ by then end of the year. Currently it takes approximately 7 minutes for a complete cycle. I will probably split the checks into two or three SA installations for both time and redundancy. The biggest time constraint I have now is the end of cycle processing(creating logs, html pages, etc.). That takes 4 minutes and our checks are every 5.I've asked Dirk about multi-threading the app before but it's done in VB which does not support threads. It's not a concern for us since the cost of SA is so reasonable we can purchase multiple copies and multiple servers and still not reach the cost of many competing products. Every vendor I've had come in to replicate what we currently do has been from 40k USD to 200k USD. The total cost of my toolset has been under 20k USD including the server.-Kevin-----Original Message-----

Subject: [SA-list] SizingGuys & Girls--
What's the maximum number of monitors that you guys are using? The docs say that the Enterprise version can handle as many as 5000 monitors, but what's the most you guys have had running in *production*? What's the performance like? How long does it take to get through one iteration? At what point do you split the load onto two SA's running on two different machines?
The reason I'm asking--we've been using SA for the last month or so in a trial capacity and we're about purchase it. Before I go creating 1000 monitors, I'd like to get an idea of what the sizing requirements are.
Thanks,
KevinPS--Dirk, as you're breaking into more enterprise environments because your software is so good (and damn it's good for its price point), have you given any thought to spawning multiple threads under the UI to do the monitoring?

It's
true, I could do all of this through SQL/ODBC/ASP, but we have several
initiatives here that are XML and SOAP based, and this is my attempt to align
how we create reports and move data. Another nice thing about doing it
this way is that by using XML data islands, we can hide data from the user
until it's required (as in a drill-down) and then display it without a trip back
to the server; Ad-Hoc reports all on the client-side.
And
besides that....it's just cool
