We saw this when our server was just upgraded from 8.0.5 to 8.1.7.4  Seems Oracle plays by new rules with the listener.  Used to be that for shared services Oracle/TNS Listener would return the IP address of the physical server.  Now in 8.1.7.4 they return the hostname of the physical server which would fail to resolve and the clients were all running in dedicated mode.
