The 2nd alert is fired when the entry is UP after a down, even after ONE
down, so it's normal that you get the up alert and not the down when the
entry is only down for one cycle.

Subject: RE: [SA-list] Re-configuring alerts query

Dirk,

Thanks for your replies. Let me explain what I've got set-up just in case
I've made a configuration error. I *think* I might know why I'm getting
"false" UPs because I do have my alerts configured in a specific way that
most people won't have probably done before.

I'm running Servers Alive v4.0.1501 on a Windows 2000 Pro (with SP4)
workstation and have configured a URL(http/https) check for a web site
accessible over the Internet. I'm not going through any proxy servers and
there is no authentification configured for the check as the web site is
publicly accessible. The check (performed every 2 minutes) works fine but as
I said in my last e-mail occasionally we used to get a report that the web
site was down when in fact it wasn't. There is just something we put down to
the occasional connectivity problems we get with accessing sites on the
Internet and so to improve the reliability of the check we configured it as
follows:

Send SMTP mail via primarary server to {support team} when 2 times down

Now, this is our first of TWO configured alerts we have configured for this
ONE check. The second alert we have configured for this check is for our UP
alerts and this is configured as follows:

Send SMTP mail via primary server to {support team} when up after a down

So why do we have individual UP and DOWN alerts configured for this one
check when we could just check the "and when back up too" checkbox on our
DOWN alert? Well, quite simply we have a requirement for the format of the
UP and DOWN alert e-mails to be different (they have been configured with
both different subject and body contents). The only way I found I could do
this was by creating two separate alerts for this one check.

Therefore, I suspect the reason I might be receiving an UP alert even though
the check has only failed once (and therefore no DOWN alert has been sent)
is because these two alerts have been configured separately. It is like the
alerts are not really aware of one another but this could simply be the
designed behaviour of Servers Alive rather than a bug.

Any comments anyone?

Neil Johnson

Indeed that's what I would say :-)
The backup alert should only be send IF a an alert for the down is send too.

Dirk will tell you (I am not speaking for him just in advance of him) that
it will only send an Up alert only after a down condition has reached its
desired count (e.g. when down 5 times) I am writing to reinforce your
position ont his. I have also received up alerts even though no down has
been sent. wHen reviewing the logs I see that the down should NOT have been
sent (conditions not met) and therefore the up should not have been as well.
I do believe there is a bug somewhere in the program but this does not
happen every time for me and I think it only happens on a couple of checks.
I can watch more closely and get more details if desired.

Subject: [SA-list] Re-configuring alerts query

Hi everyone,

I have a small query that I hope someone can help me with. I'm running the
latest beta version of Services Alive v4 and we monitoring a number of web
sites over our LAN and the Internet. Due to the various network glitches we
have in order to make sure we don't get too many false alarms from Services
Alive I have configured it only to send a DOWN alert after a web site has
failed two consecutive checks. This works great for us and we rarely get any
false alarms but what we do get is the UP alert e-mailed to us even though
no DOWN alert is sent to us beforehand. This is because the web site fails
one check but not two consecutive checks. Now this isn't a big problem but
it is a little irritating to receive an UP e-mail now and again for
something that hasn't been alerted as DOWN in the first place. So here is my
question. Can I re-configure Servers Alive to send an UP alert ONLY when a
DOWN alert has been out? i.e. Can an UP be sent out ONLY after there has
been two consecutive DOWNs? I've looked at the options available to me and I
can't see how I can configure the alerts to work in this way so any advice
would be much appreciated.

Also Dirk, can you please tell me if there is any plans for a future version
of Servers Alive to support checking web sites that use NTLM or Integrated
Windows Authentification and not just Basic Authentification? Because we
would find support for checking NTLM protected web sites very useful indeed!

Thanks in advance,

Neil Johnson
