Depends what you are trying to do. I monitor several remote sites that are connected via cable modems and a VPN router to my main site. The remotes consist of several PCs and a couple of printers. From my main site, I monitor the real ip of the cable modem, the real IP of the VPN/router and the inside IP of the VPN/router. I have them dependent - Inside router is dependent on outside of VPN, is dependent on modem.
I have been using Cisco 1700 on remote and PIC box on main. If cable goes down - fairly often occurrence, VPN reestablishes when it come back up. I have used ping time charts I have built to beat up on our cable provide to show how poor their performance gets during the afternoons. I use also SA to monitor that the virus updates stay up-to-date. I also monitor a single PC offsite that is connected via a MS VPN connection over DSL. When it is connected, it gets a main site address - that varies, so the server name in SA is always the PC name, not an IP address. At the sites, I don't bother with PCs but if there were servers there I would monitor them - I do watch the printers. The single PC is supposed to be on all the time so I do watch that.
