There is a small difference yes. In most cases the way v4 does it (by default) works better then the way v3 did it. However towards some systems the new v4 way doesn't work well, that why there is new option (not in the doc) that is called "linger", you can enable/disable this on a per protocol level (CTRL-P screen and only for TCP checks). With LINGER enabled you're using the v3 way to connect/disconnect.
