To further clarify (because GetIF and Dirk are both partly correct), SNMP is a description of elements and sub-elements (as you probably guessed) When there is a subelement, it receives a dotted numeral from 1 to a bazillion-gillion. Well, ok, probably not that high. If there is no subelement, then the actual data will be at subelement zero (.0). Direct connect SNMP services like Servers Alive need that last dot-zero to get the data back. However the SNMP walkers are highly dependant on the actual MIB file used, so sometimes they show the dot-zero and sometimes they assume this last part, and just show it without the dot-zero (like you found with GetIF). GetIF WILL show this to you if you actually click on the sysUpTime entry (or any entry) in the window where all the responses show, and then the OID in the BOTTOM window will add the dot-zero.

Hi, I am running SA ver 4.1 and I am trying to understand how SNMP monitoring works via SA. I am just doing some tests and I have enabled the SNMP service on my SA box itself (Winodws 2000 PRO) to do some simple tests to see how it works. I am not getting far ! Here is what I have done: * I am using the application Getif to view the MIBs / OIDs ( and I can see them) * I am copying an OID (.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3 which is sysUpTime) and placing this OID number in the SA app (see below) When I hit the Test it button, I receive: ERR No Such Name. What am I doing wrong, what steps am I missing ??? Your help would be VERY Much appreciated.
