A solution I have in place is to have schedule events started using a batch file or script to call the required task, with an additional line in the script to call 'LogEvent' which is a Microsoft utility that you can use to add entries into EventLogs.

Then you can use Mark Bradshaw Event ID Check - 'CheckEvt.pl' from the Servers Alive website on the following page
 
 
to check the eventlogs for the entries you have created. using the above method.
 
It's a little long winded but appears to work.
