Hi,

I've been looking through the archives and there is a lot of stuff about
SNMP and APC ups's. I have to say that I've never implemented SNMP and don't
yet have a clue where to start. Having read the posts I'm still not very
much clearer and hope someone can give this simpleton a layman's
explanation.

I understand that there are certain devices (APC UPS's) that have a NIC that
allows them to communicate on the network. I also get that these devices
(via SNMP) present a list of monitored things that have values indicating
their status.

In my scenario I have a server running Win Server 2003 STD and SA which has
a serial cable connected to an APC Smart-UPS 2200, which the windows UPS
service recognises.

Do I still need to use SNMP to monitor this UPS? If so, what would be the
easiest (least amount of third-party products installed) way to configure SA
to monitor it. Also, does the SNMP thing work both ways? By that I mean, is
it possible to get SA to tell the UPS to switch off?

Hope I'm not irritating too many people with my stupidity and that someone
can provide answers or at least point me in the right direction to find
answers.

Thanks in advance,
Alistair Francis
