I have similar problems... when running the Eventlog checks the response time varies from 150ms to over 20000ms many times... and some have been even longer!
I'm running with the authentication set to the remote box's admin id & pwd... and the SA server is running logged in as an admin account on it...
Tried most of these things and decided that the issue must be one of network issues, since the check run locally on the remote box runs in less than 100ms consistently...

I've tried it like that, but I have also run it as System with no desktop interaction and also as an admin account on the SA box. No difference.
