I know that most people use salive in a server room to monitor the network
and/or servers. I use salive on a home network. I have cable access and
sometimes the cable modem needs to be rebooted. I also have an old x-10
powerhouse control that has a serial connection to program it with. Salive
is on (1) computer and the powerhouse is on a different one. I now have
salive checking that the cable is working. If it fails it copies a text
file to the other pc (inet is down). On that pc I have a program that
checks this file for a change (time/date). If it sees that the file has
changed it runs a batch file that checks (reads the text for up or down) If
down, run batch file that turns off the x-10 module for the cable modem,
wait 1 minute and then turn the modem back on. If internet is back then ok,
if not then (at least) it's not a hung cable modem. I just thought it might
be of some interest to see different ways salive is being used...
