Gene,
First you need to download the tarball(*nix speak for archive or .zip file). Then you have to get it over to your SmoothWall.
Read this to learn how--
http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3184

Then run the commands in the first post. They "unzip" the files and "install" it.
You'll need to use the snmp.conf file in /usr/local/etc/snmp/ to configure it.

It's not as simple as a windows installer :-( .

Can I ask what you are trying to monitor??. I have a SmoothWall running at home and 2 where I work and have not had the need to monitor anything beyond basic connectivty and maybe to check some processes to make sure they are running.

SmoothWall does not include SNMP.
See http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7015 for a HOWTO for install.

No,

Did you compile in SNMP and all? If so, then you'll need to edit your

snmp.conf (I think that's the file) to state your community strings.

I'm usingf version 2.0 of smoothwall. I don't ever see how you config snmp
on the firewall. I've checked all the options (that I can see) and don't
see anything releating to snmp.

This is with an older revision of smoothwall, I'm not sure if the newer
ones come with SNMPd running

Subject: RE: [SA-list] salive & firewalls

I'll try this again, but this time...
Does anyone know the read/write community string for Smoothwall? I have
Getif and Ireasoning to see the OID's but I'm missing the read/write
community strings so they are not working. With this info I could then have
Salive do a lot more checks on the firewall

Thanks

Is anyone using salive to check a firewall box? I have smoothwall on an old
166 pc with 3 nic's and I'm going to install it on my home (cable) network.
Was just thinking if the box should lock up can I be checking it with
salive and then (some how) reboot the box??? Maybe I could put the box on
an x-10 module and then turn it off and then back on ( that's no a
problem). I just don't know what I could (should) be checking with salive
to see that the box is working ok or needs to be rebooted??? Any thoughts,
ideas???
