I want to create graphs that displays the uptime of servers for the past
month. I use the following create and graph scripts:

"C:\Salive\rrdtool.exe" create "C:\temp\Graph\sa_2.rrd" -s 120
DS:stats_uptime:DERIVE:720:0:U RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:21600

"C:\Program Files\Salive\external\rrdtool.exe" graph month_sa_2.png
--start now-31d --end now --imgformat PNG --title="Uptime on Server x"
DEF:sa_2=sa_2.rrd:stats_uptime:AVERAGE LINE1:sa_2#0000FF:"Up Time"

These scripts create a graph. And the graph looks like the first graph
in the attached file "graph.png", while what I want is a graph that
looks like the second graph, because other statistics generated of this
server show that the server has been up since I started the generation
of graphs..
Why does the graph look like this when it should be a straight
horizontal line?
Is it wrong to use AVERAGE? Should I use MAX instead? (And what does
LAST do?)
Is it correct to use DERIVE? What I want to see is the uptime of the
server through out the month. Should I use COUNTER instead? Would that
not result in an ever increasing value through out the month?
If I use the DERIVE, do I have to restart all the servers to create a
starting point?

I want a graph that, as long as the server is up all of the 24 hours of
the day, shows a straight horizontal line for the entire day. If the
server is down it should be set to zero for the time it is down.

What should I do with my Create and Graph scripts to achieve this?

Tom.

Subject: RE: [SA-list] Generate graphs of up and downtime

An update script is basic "just" going to add new data to a existing
database file. Within the update script we do not point to any DS
within
the database, only to the database.
The update script can not be altered.

The problem with the spaces in the path, we know about that. This is
something that is already fixed in the latest beta builds. Also (just
so
you know) we're working on several smallish but usefull extensions of
the
RRD part of Servers Alive. For example SA HTML tags for the graphs, SA
HTML
tags that can be used within an CASE/IF to see IF RRD is used for that
entry. The default CREATE script will propose an "options line" that
enables the creation of graphs that are not only for the past hour, but
also
day/week/month/year. The graph script will by default then also include
the
commands to create day/week/month/year graphs. The RRD database and the
graphs can be in different directories, even per graph type you can have
a
different directory. All little things that will make the RRD
integration a
bit better...

Subject: RE: [SA-list] Generate graphs of up and downtime

I have now been able to create graphs, my problem was that the path to
rrdtools included space. This resulted in an error when running the
update
script, and the databases and graphs where then never updated with new
values.

For creating graphs with Servers Alive and rrdtool, I run the following
command when creating the CREATE script in Servers Alive (Setup->
Logging ->
RRDTools ) :

-s 120 DS:stats_uptime:DERIVE:720:0:U RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:21600

This will create databases for each server of the uptime of each server.

What I want is the uptime for each server over a period of a month. I
want
to collect data every other minute.

Is this a correct command to use?

Is the stats_uptime the right DS to get the time a server has status up?

I have altered the graph script to be as follows:

rrdtool.exe graph month_sa_1.png --start now-31d --end now --imgformat
PNG
--title="Uptime on server xxx" DEF:sa_2=sa_2.rrd:stats_uptime:AVERAGE
LINE1:sa_2#0000FF:"Up Time"

The update scripts are created automatically by Servers Alive.

Will the update script fetch the right data (stats_uptime) ?

And if not, is there any way to alter the automatically created update
script?

Tom

The GRAPH script is created once (when you push the button to create it
:-))
and from that point on we execute it. So if you change the existing BAT
file (sa_create_graph.bat) you can do anything you want with it.

Subject: [SA-list] Generate graphs of up and downtime

I am new to using the RRDTools, and I want to generate graphs of up and
downtime of servers. I want to display the sum of the downtime of all
servers each day, and the sum of the downtime of all servers for each
day
for the last month using the graph method in RRDTools. I want to display
this in the same graph. Using the build-in feature in Servers Alive
(File->Setup->Logging->RRDTools->"Generate CREATE script"- button) I am
able
to alter the standard CREATE script to what I want. However I am not
able to
alter the GRAPH script. And my first question is:

1) Is it possible to alter both the graph and create script in Servers
Alive, or to I have to build the graph script separately?

By using the create script below a bat file that generates several rrd
files
(This script may have several flaws):

rrdtool create Graph/filename --start now-30d --step 60
DS:stats_uptime:DERIVE:1000000:U:U DS:stats_downtime:DERIVE:1000000:U:U
RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:60:744

My second, and most important question is then:

2) How do I summarize the downtime and uptime of servers, and display
this
in one graph?

There are four statuses I eventually want to display : up, down,
unavailable
and maintenance

I am able to display the header and vertical label that I want, but
that's
about it..

I would appreciate any help I can get on this subject

Best regards

Tom Fladsrud
