of utils I could use as a stop gap until full xmpp support is included? ie a cmd
line util I can all with a sequence of options.

Yep the idea is to have an XMPP alert.
We didn't continue with it last year because at that time
there were no real big names using it or officialy supporting
it.
Now that Google uses it we will try to add
it.
For the moment the logon to Google is already slightly
different then the normal XMPP (due to the other encryption they are using), but
we already got passed that :-) Now working on the message sending
itself...

As google is just using XMPP/Jabber are we
going to see full jabber support at last?
I recall this was tested a while ago but
nothing seemed to happen. I could really do with this now. We use Jive
Messenger internally only and don't use any other 3rd party messenger
systems.
I'm happy to test anything that works with
XMPP
