This is a trace from ethereal...

I can see that it finds the server (smtpin.livemail.co.uk)
sends a EHLO to my server (dsvr001885)
then gets passed to the other mail server (250-smtpin73.livemail.co.uk)
then AUTH_LOGIN
then the error.

Thanks for your help on this.

Stu

If you have a sniffer (netmon or ethereal) could you then make a network
trace showing what happens, with that we can pin-point the exact problem.

The server needs to auth to send messages, and receive.

In outlook you would 'use the same settings as my incoming mail server'.

Still no joy I am afraid , even if i remove the username and password.

By giving a username/password in the SMTP part you're basicly saying that
your SMTP server needs authentication. Is that the case? If not then the
username/password part in the SMTP part of the screen should not be entered.

Yes I have even deleted the check and added it again.

I have included a screen shot :

Thanks

Did you enable SMTP authentication?

Thanks Dirk,

I have changed the time out to and the error log is now showing : Wednesday,

February 15, 2006 12:19:05 PM External COM check (W00000008,1):ERR SMTP: 502

Error: command not implemented.

Am I being really stupid? You can be honest :)

It's a timeout issue.
Increase the timeout of that entry.

I have got the SMTP2POP3 and its all installed etc however it is not
working.

I have turned on logging and get the following error :

Wednesday, February 15, 2006 10:11:23 AM External COM check
(W00000008,1):ERR: didn't stop within the given timeout

I am not sure what is mis-configured.

I have tried resolving the mail server via IP and mail.domainname and it
fails, however if i telnet i can log into the mailbox.

Any ideas?

Stu

Your best bet may be to have a look at the mailflow com check
(SMTP2POP3). This will send a mail to a pop3 mailbox then check if the
mail was actually received.
