With direct send SA will try to contact the SMTP server responsible for the domain of the TO part of the mail.(based on the MX record of that domain). But again for this you need access to port 25/SMTP.

Did you configure a fixed smtp server or did you enable direct send? If it's a fixed SMTP server then try (from a command prompt) TELNET <smtp-server> 25 Does that work? Dirk.
