Title: RE: [SA-list] Re: [SA-list] RE: [SA-list] RE: [SA-list] RE: [SA-list] RE: [SA-list] What can masquerade as a name resolution problem?

Problem solved:

Here’s an FYI in case anyone pulls this up on a search later:

Dirk had emailed me off-list in the afternoon with a couple more things to check, and the results were still confusing.  We noted that unchecking the authentication box OR filling it in with intentionally wrong information gave a clear “access denied” message, while of course (as noted), correct information resulted in the “path not found” message.

After sleeping on it, I started to wonder if this meant that the authentication was actually OK, but something was preventing SA from seeing whatever it needs to see for these checks.  We do have certain services disabled for security or efficiency, so I started to look for services that weren’t part of the standard that had been disabled.  One of the ones I found was the “ Remote Registry Service ”.  It was disabled.  When I re-enabled it, all my broken checks started working.

I’m afraid to go look at the SA docs and see if I just missed something that specified this as a prerequisite.  My apologies if I did.  However, this was not the way I built the box, and so I think I have to go smack some knuckles.  J

Thanks all who helped, and sorry for generating so much traffic on this.

Joe
