That's a great idea! I had not thought of that.

Another idea:
I keep an eye on Servers Alive by using another machine running a free 10 check
copy of SA. On this copy, I have installed the file-date-time-modified check
and I check to make sure that the html file created by my primary SA
installation has been modified in the last five minutes. Admittedly, the
weakness of this set up is it uses SA to monitor SA. BUT, it has been working
reliably for me for two years.

On the subject of SA stopping for no good reason, I offer this. I have five
copies of SA running. They all run on Windows serve 2000 or 2003 and monoitor
win 2000 or 2003 servers. Each copy has stopped working at one time or another
for no visible reason. What I have learned is that in my situation, it is
always a windows perf mon check that is causing problems for SA. What happens
is the perfmon subsystem of the monitored server gets flaky for some reason
over time, and then SA chokes. It happens usually with checks on MS Exchange
such as Exchange memory counters, or SMTP queue length. If I place those
checks in maintenance and re-start SA, it will run reliably. In order to start
using those checks again, I have to re-boot the server. As a result, I do not
monitor these items on most of my servers anymore using SA.

Cheers-David

That's what I do. I run a telnet port check on port 18457 against the sa server
itself. This fails, and the check schedule is only open from 8:00 am to 8:15 am
with a send alert when once down.
