So you need to write a telnet script. Should be fairly simple using many
programs. I do not know the telnet commands off hand but I am sure there is a
reference somewhere.

The model I am looking is one where the check id is already defined on each
server - they just "toggle" it.

We are doing what you describe with SAWeb.

Mark,

I would love to have a "Remote Maint" tool. Here's the problem I want to
solve: A tech works on server A. They need to put server A checks in
Maintenance mode within SA to prevent false alarms during their work. They
forget to do so, or SA is inconvenient for them to get to.

Since we typically have a lead "PING" check for each server, with all other
checks dependant on that successful PING, I would like to have a tool that I
could put on each server as a desktop icon. Clicking on the icon would allow
me to set/clear the maintenance flag of just one specific check.

Obviously I would have to configure the name of the SA server and the specific
check ID as I install on each server. May also require SA telnet information
and password - hopefully stored encrypted on each server.

In an IDEAL world, the Remote Maint tool would be able to also have the tech
set a "maintenance window (minutes)" that would be passed to SA. SA would
then automatically remove the MAINT hold after that many minutes - since that
is also a frequently missed step in the process. But that would require a
change within SA. Unless you had a server component to the Remote Maint tool
that ran on the SA box......

Thanks Irene, and Michael. Love the thumbs up. I think I’d have enough
on my plate with SAWeb, and a possible rebuild of SARemote if time allows. For
those that may not remember SARemote, it was a little tray app that sat down by
the time and silently watch your SA installation to make sure it was up and all
checks were good. On failure it would flash at you and let you know something
was up. I built it when I worked at a company in the shadow of an airport, and
pagers were very spotty. No promises yet on either (assuming they are still
warranted). I’m just kicking it around.

I would be interested to know, though, what general items (add-ons) people
thought would be useful. I used to ask this question every few months to gauge
the need of the group. The normal caveat was that it shouldn’t create
any pain for Dirk, and would hopefully be a fun, small project that
wouldn’t take long to crank out.

Any suggestions?

Mark

Welcome Back Mark...

BTW, I have a TelnetCOM check that needs a new developer... (hint hint) :)

You read my mind, Barry. :o) That’s definitely one thing I’m
kicking around. .Net flavor.

Glad to see you’re still up and kicking Mark! You’d sure have a few
people excited if you could ‘have some fun’ again with
SAWeb…. That being if you can tear yourself away from ‘solutions
architecture’ for us little people… J

Welcome back.
