Tom's ideas seem a way to appease many of the masses by allowing more granular filtering by selecting columns. If you were to go this far with the GUI it would be nice to hide/show only certain checks/check types. Then allow exporting of the current view. This would allow many of the reports people have been asking.
Not to discount the above because if it workable it would help many people who have been asking for better reporting and such, but it does seem to me that by putting the checks in more of a database format or xml or whatever it would be easy to write custom reports and get the same and even more powerful results than Tom is asking for. If Dirk is willing to implement Tom's changes I believe it will bridge the gap until another host file format comes to the fore.
