It may help to increase the timeout value in SA as well. If indeed your server is broken it won't regardless of the timeout. If you are interested in hearing about it every time your server slows down leave the timeout value but it sounds like you don't care if it is just loaded. Another option is to create two checks. One with a fairly long timeout value that alerts the first time and one with a lower timeout that alerts only after 4 or 5 times. The short timeout one would depend on the long timeout one that way if indeed the server is broke you only get on from the first one. I have done similar things to this in the past and it works well. One is a SuSe Linux GroupWise box, and it responds perfectly every check. The other is a Gentoo Linux box running Sendmail and I occasionally get an alert of "Connection possible, but received data not correct". By occasional I mean one check out of every 50 or so, or once every couple of hours. When I get the alert I test and email seems to be flowing, and there is no unusual load on the server at that time, and the alert usually clears within another cycle or two. I turned on second knock and it cut down to where it only throws this out once every 5-6 hours, but still occurs regularly none the less. So, outside of setting the alert to wait until it is down 3 or 4 times in a row, anyway to get rid of the false positives? Anyone else run Sendmail or see SMTP alerts similar to the above?
